"There is something to be said for letting a garden go to seed..."

"There is something to be said for letting a garden go to seed. In fact, I have never quite understood such figures of speech as "gone to seed" and "looking seedy." Metaphorically, they are used to imply stagnation and decay, but in nature, seediness is a condition of ripeness and fruition. Where, after all, would we be if nothing went to seed?"
the first paragraph from Robert Finch's essay, "Going to Seed" from his book Common Ground: a Naturalist's Cape Cod (1981)

Our dear friend Chuck offered this essay as a point of view for which to embrace the change of season. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
